Make Life Beautiful Today!

June 6, 2016

There’s an official day to make life beautiful. The official description of this lovely idea reads: “It is a day dedicated to encouraging and celebrating men and women who are making life beautiful.  Whether you’re creating beauty through building relationships or helping others achieve personal success, one small action can lead to a ripple effect, making life beautiful not just for yourself, but for those around you, too.” Too bad it’s only one day…but does it have to be so?

Think about it. We smile at a stranger (or they at us) and the day gets brighter. Open a door for someone (or have it opened) and everyone smiles to themselves at the kindness. We find ourselves grinning when we see that cute little bumper sticker that reads: “Practice random acts of kindness.”

And yet, the world is cruel, divided and violent on its worst days. When we think of changing the world; changing the state of humanity, we think it’s an overwhelming, unattainable thing…this ephemeral concept of what might be, with little root in reality. In actuality, making life beautiful takes only the slightest effort. The tender touch of a hand on a shoulder, a smile of encouragement; a hug, an expression of solace when someone is in need all work to make life more beautiful.

Of course, there are those working to make life beautiful on a grand scale and we admire and respect the courage and tenacity it takes to show kindness in a culture that loves to beat us down…or so it seems. To those people, we take off our hats as their vision for a better world comes at a high price. We support their efforts and cheer them on. At our best, we become engaged in their causes and work for the better of us all.

But for each of us, a random act of kindness reveals our true humanity and connects to each other as we should be…standing shoulder to shoulder, in this together, working to make life beautiful for everyone around us as well as ourselves.

What if we all commit…right now…to make life more beautiful for someone, not just today but on a regular basis? We could…and will change the world into a kinder and gentler place to live.

Join me. Let’s be kind. Share with me how you’ll make life beautiful today…and every day!
