Why Does the Food Industry Want to Block GMO Label Laws?

An article appeared in Bloomberg Business Week on February 6 that should have us nervous about the future of our food…and asking a lot of questions.

The Coalition for Safe Affordable Food includes twenty-nine members representing companies like PepsiCo, the world’s largest manufacturer of snack food and Monsanto, as well as the National Corn Growers Association, the National Restaurant Association and the American Beverage Association.  Read more

A Right to Know—and the Freedom of Choice

As managing editor of Healthy Living magazine, I stay fairly informed about health and nutrition. As an author, while conducting research for 50 Simple Steps to Save the World’s Rainforests, I read many disturbing reports of negligent practices by governments and agribusiness around the world. Sadly, it has become as clear as day to me that the government, food manufacturers—especially the larger ones—and agribusiness do not place enough value on health, safety and the environment. Profit motives too often prevail. So it is largely up to us consumers to educate ourselves about the origin of our food and how its production affects workers, the planet and our health. And that’s why Proposition 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, is incredibly important.   Read more

Caught Napping - Invasion of the Body Snatchers Redux

I've seen how people have allowed their humanity to drain away. Only it happened
slowly instead of all at once. They didn't seem to mind.  All of us - a little bit – we
harden our hearts, grow callous. Only when we have to fight to stay human do
we realize how precious it is to us, how dear.

                                – Invasion of the Body Snatchers

In last month’s Caught Napping entitled “GMOedipus Rex,” I note how GMO is steadily infiltrating all areas of our lives from our jeans to our genes. Low and behold, not a month later and we are talking about Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, as a GMO product. The very idea that everyday consumables from the cotton in our clothes to artificial sweeteners may contain GMO underscores how pervasive and insidious this phenomenon really is.  We don’t even know where to look.   Read more

GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)…Playing Roulette with Our Lives

G-M-what’s? GMOs are genetically modified organisms that are engineered in a lab, in petri dishes, without any influence from Mother Nature, and then used to create new breeds of foods (and other living things). DNA and other compounds, like pesticides, are incorporated into organisms for an end purpose. We know little about the long-term effects of these foods on us and the planet.

“Round-Up Ready” is the name given to soy and corn that was developed by Monsanto and involves the pesticide Round Up being integrated right into the seeds before they are planted. The theory they are trying to sell is that this will require less pesticides to be sprayed, but according to experts at Cornell University, this practice has ended up requiring a more intense use of pesticides as the plants around the corn and soy (and the corn and soy themselves) grow resistant to the Round Up. Mistake?  Read more

We Have the Right to Know What’s in Our Food

A recent survey conducted by Reuters and National Public Radio in October 2010 states that more than 90 percent of Americans think genetically modified organisms (GMOs) should be labeled. Come November, California may join the more than 40 countries of the world that label GMOs with the passage of a ballot initiative called the California Right to Know. If California wins a labeling victory, then it could pave the way for the rest of the country.  Read more

Holy GMO’s, Batman! In Artificial Sweeteners, Too?

GMO’s are complex and often confusing. They are ingredients derived from plants whose DNA has been altered with genes from other plants, animals, bacteria or viruses.
Yuck, right?
If you didn’t think artificial sweeteners were bad enough, aspartame, considered by many to be the most widely used sweetener in the world, is found in soda, sweets, diet foods and a host of other processed foods. And by virtue of the fact that it’s an artificial sweetener (and with that comes a laundry list of troubles), now it has been discovered that it’s being made using a secret genetic engineering process…a fact that has some scientists saying further testing is needed to discover the impact on human health.  Read more

Election 2012: California’s Prop 37 Could Affect The Whole Nation

Why we should have the right to know which foods are genetically modified…
Although Prop 37, also known as the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, is a California initiative, it has national implications. Prop 37 would require food manufacturers to label any foods containing genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. This is a major win for consumers and a setback for companies like Monsanto Read more

Caught Napping - GMOedipus Rex

Not only has Shane formally asked me to sleep in the guest room by way of a post-it note on the vanity, she actually burned that special copy of my great opus -- Zucchini, the Other White Meat – that I autographed for her on our first date. It gets worse.  I have also been ostracized by my Wednesday lunch group, the Fermented Four.  In fact, they have asked me with menacing undertones by way of a Craigslist personal ad to maintain a minimum distance of 100 feet from any Whole Foods salad bar lest I bring pestilence and contamination to those most sacred grounds.  They have also notified me that they have changed their name to the Kimchi Three following my excommunication.    Read more
